2015: STOP CAMPAIGN,PROF JEGA WARNS POLITICIANS.

The Chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission, Professor Attahiru Jega has sounded a note warning to politicians and their supporters who have gone out of the electoral guidelines,by embarking upon campaigns for the 2015 general election to desist from further campaign, threatening to evoke the electoral laws in punishing offenders.
Prof. Jega, through his chief press secretary Kayode Robert Idowu, said that it has been observed that some desperate politicians and registered political parties have begun unbrildled campaign ahead of 2015 general elections......"It's observed that campaign posters are being indiscriminately displayed, while electioneering broadcasts are being aired outside the statutory provision for campaign towards elecions into various elective offices." Saying that the unathorized campaigns are already over heating the polity, the INEC chairman stressed that the new trend is unhealthy and portends ill for the political process.
According to Jega, the campaign are gradually threatening Nigeria's democracy reminding all political players of the provision of section 99(1) of the Electoral Act 2010(as amended) which states that: "For the purpose of this act, the period of campaigning in public by every political party shall commence 90 days before polling day and end 24 hours before the election day."
He therefore called on political parties to note that campaigning outside the provision of the electoral law amounts to the violation of the law and INEC as the electoral umpire will not hesistate to apply appropriate sections of the law against those found wanting. Calling also on security personnels to be on guard against those that will flout the order.
