Mary Olubukola Adegunloye of the Department of Mass Comm. University of Lagos left no one in doubt that she was the one to beat at the 2013 Inter-Faculty Debate organised by the Students' Affairs Division. She went home with a cash of N50,000 and a laptop.
She defeated five other contestants, who participated in the competition held last Wednesday in the University main auditorium. The topic of the debate was "Sovereign National Conference: Is It Desirable At This Stage Of Nigeria's Development?". Olubukola got the audience simply edified with her intriguing display of knowledge of the topic,as she argued in favour of the notion that Nigeria needed to convene a National Conference to disentangle itself from the various problems bedeviling it including ethno-religious strife, poverty, insecurity, unemployment and dilapidated infrastrucure.
Other contestants included Nathan Osas Odiase(Faculty of Engineering)first runner up, Dare Amusan(Faculty of Law)second runner up, Gbemisola Onasanya,3rd runner up and Nwaokoro Samuel who came fifth. The six contestants were adjudged the best among the thirteen contestants who took part in the preliminary stage of the competition. The Vice Chancellor,Prof. Rahamon Bello, who was represented by the Deputy VC (management),Prof. Duro Oni presented the trophy to the winners. The VC commended the organisers of the debate while urging students to take their academics seriously. In his remarks, former VC of Tai Solarin University of Education,Prof. Awonusi O. who is also the head of the panel of judges, stressed the importance of the topic chosen for the debate to Nigeria's development..******* Let me also join Mary in saying or in arguing that Nigeria has come of age to decide whether the force marriage by our foster parent(Britain) should go on or be dissolved since the married couples(various Nigerian ethnic groups) are always fighting and beating more war drums.
